Getting the right credit report
Know which report you need, where to obtain it and how to share it safely.
Choose a report for the question you want answered. For monthly debts and repayment history, you need readable account sections—not just a score or a personal-information page.
Check the contents before paying
Look for the report date, account types, outstanding balances, available monthly payments and dated payment history. If you want to clarify a legal or trade-reference record, check whether that section is included too. A product name alone does not tell you everything it contains.
A basic report can be useful without being enough for a payment review. A score is a separate summary; it does not replace the account pages. You do not need to buy every provider’s report to begin understanding your position.
Start with an official channel
- BNM provides free CCRIS report access through eCCRIS. Use the registration and login links on BNM’s CCRIS page; complete identity checks yourself. Its FAQs explain self-enquiry and downloading.
- CTOS offers a free Basic Report under its registration terms, without CCRIS or a score. Its paid Credit Report includes those sections. Check current coverage, price and free-access conditions before choosing.
- Experian’s consumer portal and Credit Bureau Malaysia’s MyScore page are other provider channels. Compare their current product descriptions and charges rather than assuming equivalent coverage.
Fictional example
Fictional example: you want to understand your card payments, but your downloaded report contains identity details and legal searches only. Nothing there establishes the card balance or monthly payment. The next useful step is to obtain the relevant account pages—not to interpret the missing card as no debt.
What to do next
Keep all relevant pages, dates and column headings readable. If sharing an authorised report, you may cover identifiers that are not needed, without covering financial evidence. Do not post it in a public comment or Edu chat.
Use the verified receiving channel and check why the document is needed. Never share an online-banking password, PIN or OTP with another person. A code entered by you on the authentic official service is different.
Already have a suitable report? Free Credit Review can explain the visible information. If a section is missing, say what is missing rather than buying another report blindly.
