Early settlement

Know what to request and check before paying off a facility.

Ask the provider for a current settlement quotation before paying off a facility. A credit-report balance is not automatically the amount needed to close it today.

Why the quotation matters

A report describes information at its reporting date. A settlement quotation addresses a specified payoff date under that facility’s terms. Payments since the report, amounts due, applicable rebates or charges can affect the result.

There is no single settlement formula for every loan, card or Islamic financing facility. Rules can also change: Maybank’s 2025 notice removed a particular Personal Loan settlement fee. That is not proof that every provider or product has no fee. Use the current disclosure for your own facility.

Ask before transferring

  • What date is the quotation valid for, and what changes if payment reaches the provider later?
  • What is included: outstanding amount, accrued charges, arrears, rebates or other applicable items? Ask for an explanation of unfamiliar lines.
  • Which verified account and reference should be used, and what confirmation shows the facility is fully settled?
  • For a card, check pending transactions, instalment plans and any separate closure process. A payment to the balance and closing the card are not necessarily the same action.

Fictional example

Fictional example: your report shows RM18,000, while the provider issues a RM17,500 settlement quote valid for a particular date. Use the quote and its conditions—not the RM18,000 alone—to plan the payoff. The RM500 difference is illustrative, not a promised discount or rebate.

If payment is made after the quoted date, ask for an updated amount. Paying an old figure can leave a remainder. Settlement quotes can be higher or lower than a report balance; do not assume the direction.

What to do next

Obtain the quotation through the provider’s official channel. Verify payment instructions independently, especially if a third party sends different bank details.

Keep the receipt and request written settlement or closure confirmation as appropriate. Check any remaining amount rather than assuming a successful transfer means everything is complete.

For consolidation, confirm each selected old debt is actually settled and which payments cease. Continue required scheduled payments until the provider confirms settlement or another arrangement. SunLiTe can help you read the quotation, but does not issue it or promise a fixed report-update date.
