Credit reports

CTOS, CCRIS and “blacklist”

Understand what these terms mean and what your report actually shows.

Having a CCRIS or CTOS record does not automatically mean you are “blacklisted”. Find the actual information causing concern before deciding what it means for you.

Three things that are often mixed up

  • CCRIS is BNM’s credit-information system. It records information reported by participating financial institutions; it is not a credit score or an approval decision.
  • CTOS and other credit reporting agencies provide their own report products. Depending on the product, these can include different sources and a provider-specific score.
  • The lender decides on an application using its own assessment. A report is an input, not a promise of approval or rejection.

Look at the record, not the label

When someone says “blacklist”, ask what they are referring to: a late-payment entry, an unfamiliar account, a court record, an outstanding amount or a previous rejection. These are different questions with different next steps.

A score also needs its provider, scale and date. A number from one provider cannot simply be compared with the same number from another. The account evidence matters more than a colour or a label viewed in isolation.

Fictional example

Fictional example: one report shows an active personal loan with payments recorded on time. Another section shows a legal record marked settled. Neither the existence of the loan nor the word “legal” answers whether there is a current unpaid issue. Check the specific status, date and supporting confirmation.

If a lender declines an application, that alone does not identify which record caused it. Ask for available feedback instead of paying someone who promises to “clear your name” without explaining the information.

What to do next

Note the section, date and status you want clarified. Do not assume a blank or unreadable section is clean. A historical issue and a current unpaid amount should not be treated as the same thing.

Ask the reporting institution about its account entry, or the relevant agency about its other data and dispute process. Keep written replies for your own records.

SunLiTe can help explain the visible report and questions worth asking. We cannot erase accurate records or decide on behalf of a lender.
