Costs, offers and safety
Before accepting an offer
Check the repayment, costs and important conditions before committing.
Read the full written terms before accepting—not just the attractive monthly payment. Make sure you understand what you receive, what you repay and what happens to existing debts.
A short decision checklist
- Amount and usable cash: gross financing, settlements, applicable deductions and net proceeds.
- Repayment and time: monthly amount, due date, number of payments and when the commitment ends.
- Rate and total: rate basis, total scheduled repayment and any conditions that could change it.
- Costs and conditions: product fees, insurance or takaful requirements, agreed service costs and how acceptance occurs.
- Existing debts: which accounts are fully settled and which payments remain.
- Early settlement: applicable quotation process, rebates or charges, and closure steps.
- Unanswered questions: anything different between the explanation, disclosure and actual agreement.
Clarify before you commit
Ask for the product disclosure and full agreement, plus a repayment schedule and itemised proceeds where relevant. A message or illustration is not a substitute for the actual terms. Keep a copy of what you agree to.
Some acceptance processes do not depend on signing a separate paper letter. Confirm what action constitutes acceptance for the specific product before proceeding. Do not assume an application or credited funds can always be reversed without conditions.
Fictional example
Fictional example: a proposal highlights RM1,700 a month, but does not say the term, total repayment or debts settled. You cannot yet compare it with your current position. Ask for those items first. A low monthly payment does not establish a lower total cost or enough usable cash for your purpose.
If two versions give different figures, ask which written version applies. Do not fill the gap with the more attractive figure. An unclear cost is a reason to clarify, not a reason to guess.
What to do next
Decide whether the payment still fits an ordinary or lower-income month after essential living costs and debts remaining. DSR alone does not answer this household question.
Verify the provider, payment destination and adviser’s role. Never alter documents or share banking credentials to complete an offer.
